What is an Alcohol and Drug Evaluation?

  • An Alcohol and Drug Evaluation is an evaluation by a clinical evaluator to identify the severity of your use of alcohol and drugs. 

How Referrals Occur:

  • Evaluations are through mandates from the State of Georgia Court System.  

Purpose of Evaluation:

  • Your evaluation determines if you need a class or treatment for alcohol and drug issues.

What Your Evaluation Includes:

  • Your evaluation includes a face to face interview with a clinical evaluator.

After Your Evaluation:

   After your initial evaluation, you: 

    • may have a follow-up evaluation if necessary, or 
    • your clinical evaluator may send your evaluation to your referral source, or
    • your referral source may require you to take an Alcohol and Drug/DUI Offender Class and/or receive treatment.

Tori Hatter-Smith, MS, LAC, PLPC, BC-TMC, CACII is a Licensed Addiction Counselor and a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor.  She holds a bachelor’s degree from Southern University and a master’s degree in human services with a concentration in mental health counseling from Capella University. Tori has a broad range of clinical skills including individual, group, and family recovery counseling.

What is a Bariatric Presurgical Mental Status Assessment?

  • A Bariatric Presurgical Mental Status Assessment is a screening of your psychological readiness for surgery.  It also offers insights into your strengths and advises you of concerns to address in order to enhance your post-operative recovery.  

How Referrals Occur:

  • Bariatric assessments are through doctors’ referrals only.  

Purpose of Assessment:

  • Your doctor requires that you have a Bariatric Presurgical Mental Status Assessment prior to having any form of bariatric surgery to identify whether you are mentally and emotionally prepared for having the bariatric surgery.  

What is a Bariatric Presurgical Mental Status Assessment?

  • A Bariatric Presurgical Mental Status Assessment identifies whether your psychological strength, self-motivation, and social support are appropriate for your surgery as well as for your post-surgery adjustment.  The assessment offers insights and concerns in order to enhance your post-operative recovery.   Concerns include your coping skills for stress and pain, regulation of your emotions, your life after surgery, and major lifestyle changes. 

What Your Assessment Includes:

Your assessment includes:

  • a verbal presurgical mental status exam (an overall assessment of your exercise, eating, and sleep habits).

two computerized screenings:

  • surgical weight loss psychological screening 
  • mental health evaluation screening.

Follow-up After Your Assessment

Within two weeks after taking your assessment, you meet again with your assessor who explains the results of your assessment and shares the recommendations your doctor will receive based on your assessment.
